Flyers’ Rinaldo Get Handed 8 Game Suspension for Unnecessary Hit on Letang
Penguins’ defensemen Kris Letang was hit from behind into the boards by Philadelphia Flyers’ Zac Rinaldo on January 20th in Philadelphia. Letang was defenseless in the hit and Rinaldo got a major boarding call on the play. The league handed Rinaldo an 8 game suspension on Monday for the brutal hit. Letang has only missed 1 game, due to the All-Star break, but he is questionable with concussion like symptoms for Tuesday against the Jets.
Rinaldo is a repeat offender when it comes to vicious hits against defenseless players. I personally think that Rinaldo was lucky that he only got 8 games because this was not his first go around with the league office in a dispute over a hit. I think that the suspension should have been a little more severe because this was not his first offense. While hockey is a physical sport, there needs to be some boundaries when it comes to hitting defenseless players to prevent injuries. The league needs to step it up and lay down the law when it comes to suspensions for unnecessary hits.
