Patriots Win Super Bowl XLIX, Brady Gets 4th Ring, and Pats Avoid “The Curse of the No Name Receiver”
The New England Patriots win Super Bowl XLIX 28-24 over the Seattle Seahawks in one of the best endings to a Super Bowl ever. New England was down 21-24 with under 4:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter until Tom Brady led a comeback drive and hooked up with Julian Edelman for the go ahead score. The Patriots relied on the arm of Tom Brady, as he threw 50 passes for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brady completed a Super Bowl record 37 passes tonight. Brady also broke Joe Montana’s record of 11 touchdown passes in the Super Bowl.
Seattle had a 10 point lead in the 3rd and into the 4th quarter, and New England looked winded and like they had given up. Brady rejuvenated the Pats by driving down the field and scoring a touchdown to cut the lead to 3. New England’s defense stepped up and forced a punt and then Brady went to work and that was that.
Seattle had a little over a minute left with a timeout, and Russell Wilson had a chance to drive down the field and win the game. The Seahawks threw a bomb up to Jermaine Kearse and he somehow came down with a miraculous catch against Malcolm Butler, who played the ball perfectly and couldn’t have made a better play on the ball. When Kearse caught the ball we all had thought that “The Curse of the No Name Receiver” would live on against the Patriots (David Tyree and Mario Manningham were the other 2 no name receivers going into the Super Bowl against the Pats who made ridiculous plays that led to the Pats demise). Butler redeemed himself with a goal line interception of Russell Wilson to seal the deal for the Pats.
I have one problem with Seattle’s play call on the interception. Why on earth would you throw the ball on 2nd down from inside the 5 yard line when you have one of the biggest running backs in the league in Marshawn Lynch??? Seattle made some gutsy calls and they payed off, but that doesn’t account for stupid play calls. I just don’t see the reasoning behind throwing the ball inside the 5 yard line when Lynch is in the backfield. Seattle needed to run the option with Wilson and Lynch and they would’ve scored and won.
However, if Seattle scored, Belichick would’ve been scrutinized for not calling a timeout with 51 seconds remaining in the game. He let the clock tick all the way down to 30 seconds before Seattle ran their final play that ended with the Butler INT. I was sitting there yelling at Belichick to call a timeout to save some time for Brady to have a chance to scrape together a final comeback if Seattle scored. Since Butler ended the game, we aren’t talking about what a bad call it was for Belichick, but instead for Pete Carroll to throw on 2nd down.
Instead, the Patriots are victorious once again and Brady get his 4th ring and 3rd Super Bowl MVP, both tied with Joe Montana.

It was an awesome game. Definitely an exciting one unlike last year’s (I’m a Broncos fan so I fell asleep early that night). Last night was a big win for the Patriots. I wondered the same thing about Wilson/Carroll choosing to pass the ball when they were *so* close. But maybe they did it because they thought it was an unexpected play? They probably thought that everyone expected them to use Lynch and run the ball so they chose to pass instead. They didn’t expect Butler to be waiting for them right where the Patriots needed him to be. We’ll never know why but the bad call + a simply stunning interception by the Pats earned the Pats the ring.

Pete Carroll said in an interview last night that they saw that the Patriots had their jumbo package in, so they were trying to catch them off guard because they were ready for the run. Also they were trying to throw on 2nd down and then if needed run the ball on 3rd and 4th down. Thanks for the comment!!!
