Dick Lebeau To Join Titans
I was correct in my assumption on January 26th that Lebeau would join the Titans. It is expected that Lebeau and the Titans will finalize the deal late this week for Lebeau to become the assistant head coach. Lebeau will be in charge of the defense, but Ray Horton will still be in the defensive coordinator role. Lebeau, 77, was let go by the Steelers after serving as their defensive coordinator for 11 years.
I want to reiterate what I stated in my article from January 26th that Lebeau will need some players to run his defense. You can have the best coach in the world, but you need some actual talent to make that scheme and system excel. The Titans don’t really have any key defensive players, so they will need to do some shopping during free agency and do their homework for the draft.
I will be interested to see the controversy that arises between Lebeau and Horton. Who is going to really run the defense? Will Lebeau give orders down to Horton to give to the players, or will Lebeau “oversee” the defense and let Horton make all the game calls? My personal opinion is that Lebeau will end up taking over the defense and Horton will once again take the back seat to Lebeau.
It will be interesting to see how many more seasons the 77 year old Lebeau will coach. My prediction is that he will be a coach for 3 to 4 more seasons maximum, then he will retire. As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I wished that Lebeau would just retire a Steeler. Instead he went to Tennessee, but, in any case, I wish Lebeau the best of luck, and boy will he need it.
