Christian Quarterbacks: Past, Present, and Future- Marcus Mariota
Today is my final part in my 3-part series of Christian Quarterbacks. Day 1 was about Tim Tebow, Day 2 was about Russell Wilson, and today is about a quarterback about to go into the NFL draft, Marcus Mariota.
Mariota was the quarterback for the Oregon Ducks from 2012-2014. Mariota was a monster in college through the air and on the ground. He amassed 10,796 yards, 105 passing touchdowns, and only 14 interceptions. He had a 7.5 touchdown to interception ratio. He also ran for 2,237 and 29 touchdowns.
In 2012, Mariota was a redshirt freshman, and he was the first freshman quarterback of Oregon in 22 years to start the season opener. He led the Ducks to a 12-1 record and to a Fiesta Bowl victory over #5 Kansas State. He received awards for Pac-12 freshmen offensive player of the year, Pac-12 All-Conference first team, and Fiesta Bowl MVP.
2013 was a disappointing year for Mariota because he had a partial tear of his MCL, but continued to play through it. He was also a Heisman trophy front-runner, but when Oregon fell to #6 Stanford his Heisman chances were over. Oregon would finish 11-2 and Mariota would become the first player in Oregon history to gain 4,000 yards from scrimmage in a season.
in 2014, Mariota was the preseason Heisman favorite by a landslide, and he began to show why he was the front-runner. He finished the year winning not only the Heisman but also the Davey O’Brien Award, Walter Camp Award, and Maxwell Award. The Ducks went on to be one of the first 4 teams in the first College Football Playoff. They played in the 2015 Rose Bowl against Florida State and annihilated them 59-20. Mariota was named the MVP of the Rose Bowl. The Ducks would then lose to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the National Championship Game 42-20.
Mariota is ranked 2nd in quarterbacks in this years draft, behind Jameis Winston. People are projecting that Mariota will fall to 6th or even to the low to mid teens. If Mariota isn’t one of the first 2 picks, then those teams are out of their minds. Mariota is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks that there are. He has a fantastic arm and is extremely elusive in the pocket and in the open field.
Mariota, like Tebow and Wilson, has been very outspoken of his faith to the media. He always give glory and praise to God to begin all his interviews and press conferences. He has also been featured in Charisma Magazine which is an amazing article and i recommend you go read it. Mariota will use his platform of playing in the NFL to glorify God, and i hope to see Mariota have a successful NFL career.
