Jeter Leads Pitt To Upset Over #12 UNC

The unranked Pitt Panthers upset the #12 North Carolina Tar Heels at the Peterson Event Center in Pittsburgh by the final score of 89-76. The Beaver Falls native Sheldon Jeter led all scorers with 22 points, adding 4 rebounds and shooting 10-14 from the field. Pitt needed to win today to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Pitt is now 17-9 and are 8th in the ACC.

Jeter is starting to look like the player that Jamie Dixon hoped he would be. Jeter has went from a bench player to one of the most vital players on the Pitt team along side Jamel Artis and James Robinson. Pitt has a very different team dynamic this season because they are no longer the physical, defensive team; Instead, they are the team that runs the floor and will outscore you. Dixon is not noted for this, but this season speaks to his coaching ability to switch schemes to fit the players that he has. Dixon has not forced his system on the players and made them play within his system, but he has let them excel at their strengths.

Pitt has caught fire of late beating #8 Notre Dame and now #12 North Carolina. These are 2 quality wins that they have gotten in conference play which can be a deciding factor in determining if Pitt receives a NCAA bid. Pitt still has 5 games remaining, one being against #2 Virginia on Monday. Monday’s game will be a huge test for the Panthers, but if they can pull off that win then they should wrap up a tourney bid. Pitt has a chance to make some noise in the ACC tournament this year because of the outstanding play of Jeter, Artis, and Robinson.
