MLBPA Officially Bans All Players From Playing In DFS
Major League Baseball and the players’ association have agreed to a deal that disallows any player to participate in any daily fantasy baseball games that involves a prize of any kind.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred at the IMG World Congress in California said that although he considered daily fantasy sports games different from gambling, playing fantasy games for any type of prize became apart of Rule 21, which prohibits gambling. Any player who violates this rule will be subject to discipline by MLB and the MLBPA.
This new rule does not prohibit players from participating in fantasy sports that does not involve a prize. As many professional athletes participate in fantasy leagues with their teammates for the fun of competing with each other. However, this rule does not prohibit a player to be associated with a daily fantasy website to promote the company. It would be interesting to see, if a player were to associate themselves with either a FanDuel or Draft Kings, how MLB will react.
