Pittsburgh Pirates sweep Giants for 5th series sweep on the season
The Pittsburgh Pirates are currently in the middle of a 10 game road trip, and they were able to split a four game set with the San Diego Padres over the weekend. But they completed the sweep of the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday afternoon behind the arm of Francisco Liriano and the bat of Jordy Mercer, who homered for the second straight day.
For the Pirates, this was their fifth series sweep this year, and they only had two all of last season. For the Giants, this was their fifth straight loss, their longest drought since dropping eight straight back in April.
Mercer and Jung-Ho Kang were the two that help push the team over the top on offense, but we can’t forget about Andrew McCutchen, who is batting .500 over the past week and batted .330 in the month of May. McCutchen seems to be finding his stroke at the plate, which is propelling everyone else to produce at the plate.
