Pittsburgh Pirates walk it off against the San Diego Padres
Monday marked the announcement of the four Pittsburgh Pirates players that would represent the team at the midsummer classic.
Andrew McCutchen will start in center field for the National League, and Mark Melancon will make his second All-Star Game appearance.
Of the four players, A.J. Burnett and Gerrit Cole are making their first appearances. Burnett is making his first and seemingly last appearance at the All-Star Game because this will most likely be his final season. This is the first time that two Pirates starting pitchers made the All-Star team since 1960, which proved to be a great season for the Pirates.
“I was waiting for ‘Just kidding,’ ” Burnett said after being informed by teammates he was selected to his first All-Star team.
Burnett came out and gave an All-Star-worthy performance on Monday. Burnett gave up an early run in the second inning off of a sac-fly, but after that he was close to perfection. Burnett ended up going 7 2/3 innings in the Pirates 2-1 win over the Padres, but Burnett got the no decision.
